Structured searching as key to calm and focus
For dogs, sniffing is much more than just a fun activity. It is an essential biological process that affects the nervous system, stimulates curiosity and helps them move from a state of tension to one of calm and focused engagement.
For dogs that react quickly to stimuli, structured searching or scent detection can make a significant difference. It helps them not only to scan for potential threats, but also to gather information, investigate and feel safer in their surroundings.
Why sniffing is so important for dogs
When a dog sniffs, the foraging behaviour system in the brain is activated. This system supports motivation, exploration and purposeful behaviour. Instead of remaining alert and tense, the dog enters a state of focus and relaxation.
This is particularly relevant for dogs that display reactivity, anxiety or excessive vigilance. In these dogs, the threat response system is often ‘switched on’ for prolonged periods. Structured searching, scent detection and sniffing in general can help shift that balance, so that the dog reacts less out of a defensive instinct and more out of curiosity and information processing.
Structured searching and stress regulation
Research shows that structured searching as key to calm and focus (detection) can have a positive effect on stress and emotional processing. Dogs that search regularly often display more relaxed behaviour and may begin to assess stimuli differently.
There are also clear physiological signs of change. Stress levels can decrease, the body transitions more easily into recovery and regulation, and the dog is given more space to calm down. In the longer term, this contributes to greater resilience and a more stable emotional foundation.
More than just a distraction technique
Sniffing is not just a trick to keep a dog occupied for a while. It is a valuable behavioural intervention that works at the level of the nervous system.
Rather than distracting the dog from triggers, sniffing helps the dog to interact with its environment differently. This makes it a powerful addition to training and guidance, particularly for dogs that are prone to anxiety, insecurity or reactive behaviour.
What does detection training involve?
In detection training, your dog learns to recognise, distinguish and track specific scents. This includes scent games, searching for hidden scent sources and structured work with a target scent.
Detection training is mentally challenging, physically enriching and a natural way to burn off energy. By giving dogs the space to sniff in a purposeful, independent and safe manner, you’re not just providing enrichment. You’re supporting their brain development, increasing their emotional flexibility and helping them to approach the world with greater calm and confidence.
Who is scent detection suitable for?
Scent detection training is suitable for almost any dog, regardless of breed, age or experience. Beginners can play simple search games, whilst more advanced dogs can carry out complex detection tasks. It works for both energetic and sensitive dogs and can be adapted to the animal’s needs.

– work independently, with as little guidance or intervention from us as possible.
